First Orthopedic Surgeon to Complete Separate Spine Fellowships in Orthopedics and Neurosurgery, Rachel Bratescu, MD, joins GW Hospital

The George Washington University Hospital welcomes Rachel Bratescu, MD, an orthopedic surgeon bringing her expertise and experience to the Spine and Pain Center.

Dr. Bratescu is the first orthopedic surgeon to complete separate accredited spine fellowships in orthopedics and neurosurgery, and one of the few surgeons in the United States to have formal training in both fields. Dr. Bratescu is an AO Spine Global Diploma recipient, maintains active involvement in the AO Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Task Force and was recently named to the 2024 North American Spine Society Top 20 Under 40 List.

Dr. Bratescu headshotDr. Bratescu received her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed an orthopedic surgery residency at Houston Methodist Hospital. Post residency she received dual fellowship training in orthopedics and neurosurgical spine surgery from New York University (NYU) Langone Health. Dr. Bratescu then became the first orthopedic surgeon, as well as the first female, to be admitted to and complete the renowned neurosurgical spine fellowship at Weill Cornell/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

Prior to joining GW Hospital’s Spine and Pain Center, Dr. Bratescu held an appointment at Weill Cornell Medical College and was an Assistant Attending in the Department of Neurosurgery at Weill Cornell/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Bratescu’s clinical interests span minimally invasive spine surgery, the evaluation and surgical management of degenerative disorders of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine (such as herniated discs and spinal stenosis), spine trauma, tumor and complex spine including scoliosis and revision surgery.
