Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health (CHRMC) officially opened its doors on Tuesday, April 15, 2025. The $434.4 million facility is centrally located in Ward 8 on the St. Elizabeths East campus, at 1200 Pecan Street SE. CHRMC currently features 136 beds with the ability to expand to 184 beds.

The hospital opening was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, April 10, attended by more than 700 people.

“Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center GW Health will change the trajectory of healthcare in our community,” Muriel Bowser, Mayor of the District of Columbia, said at the event. “This is a first-class hospital. Families can receive prenatal care and welcome new babies close to home. Seniors and other residents will have access to the specialists they need, and trauma patients will receive lifesaving care quickly.”

A block party for local residents was postponed due to weather and will be rescheduled this spring.

CHRMC is truly a labor of love for and by the community, as 500 District residents worked on construction, and the hospital will create 640 hospital jobs at full capacity.

As part of a growing, integrated network of care that includes The George Washington University Hospital (GW Hospital), Cedar Hill Urgent Care GW Health and the future Fletcher-Johnson Freestanding Emergency Department, CHRMC is building a legacy of care and connection. *

“Here, our patients are our North Star,” says Anthony B. Coleman, DHA, Chief Executive Officer at CHRMC. “Every decision we make is centered around providing an outstanding care experience to our patients and their loved ones.”

CHRMC offers access to a wide range of medical care, from routine care to the diagnosis and treatment of complex cases.

Plus, comfort and convenience are important at CHRMC. The hospital also offers patients and their families many amenities, such as free WI-FI, hearing-impaired services, inpatient food services, a cafeteria, an ambulatory pavilion for physician offices, clinics, a community space, a 500-car garage and more.

A Deeply-Rooted Commitment

The new hospital takes its name, Cedar Hill, from the nearby Anacostia house of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, a firm believer in equality for all people.

Dr. Coleman’s passion for the new hospital and its meaning to the community is clear. “CHRMC stands together with the residents of Wards 7 and 8 to improve the health status of Washingtonians East of the River,” he shares. “We believe high-quality healthcare isn’t reserved for just some – it’s meant for everyone.”
