Treating Urinary Incontinence and Other Issues
Leaking urine while sneezing, exercising or laughing might be common, but it’s not normal, and there are options to help you. The GW Pelvic Floor Center’s integrated team can help you determine the cause of your bowel or bladder symptoms and offer solutions to help you get back to the activities you love.
The pelvis has a “hammock” or “sling” of muscles located in the lower abdomen that stretches across your pelvic floor. For both women and men, the pelvic floor supports the bladder, bowel, rectum and urethra and maintains urinary and fecal continence. In women, these muscles support the uterus and play an important role in vaginal childbirth.
The GW Pelvic Floor Center is a unique program dedicated specifically to restoring pelvic area function for people of all gender identities.

A Life-Changing Procedure
Arlene Bright is an accomplished nurse and mother who struggled for years with a problem that many women face but few talk about: urinary incontinence. She met with urogynecology specialist Charelle Carter-Brooks, MD, MSc, to talk about her condition. After considering her treatment options, she decided to move forward with a vaginal prolapse repair and a midurethral sling to address the structural issues disrupting her life.
